Rebuilding the musical instruments of the ancient Khmer

This film is an introduction to the instrumental rebuilding work initiated in 2012 by Patrick Kersalé.



Harps

To date, we have reconstructed four types of harps with different aesthetics:

  • Pre Angkorian harp (7th - 8th century)
  • The Angkor Vat's harp (first half of the 12th century)
  • Angkorian harp (late 12th - early 13th century)

Zithers

We reconstructed five types of zithers over a period from the 7th to the 20th century:

  • Monocord zither with single gourd resonator
  • Double-resonator zither
  • Fretted zither
  • Monocord zither with a coconut resonator 
  • Crocodile-zither

The trisari lute is only known to us through epigraphy. No iconography exists in Cambodia but representations exist in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia at the same time, with common features.

The flute appeared as early as the 7th century and is no longer represented after the 10th century.

The first oboe iconography appears in the sixteenth century on the bas-reliefs of the north gallery of Angkor Wat and in a fresco of the same period located in the central tower of this same temple.

Trumpets and horns are represented in Angkorian iconography of a martial nature and cited in Sanskrit epigraphy.

The conchs are represented in Angkorian iconography in martial and religious contexts, Brahmanic and Buddhist and quoted in pre-Angkorian epigraphy in Old Khmer.
