Percussion - kancha

Last update: May 9, 2021

Kancha (kanche, kanchay, kancham) is used in the trot dance (robam trot របាំទ្រុត). It is made from a bamboo thatch of 2 to 2.5 meters surmounted by a horizontal cross whose ends are raised and maintained by strings. This top device is decorated with colored pennants, decorated with bells and, in its center, equipped with a rattle with internal strikers now made from recycled industrial materials.

During the dance, the kancha is struck on the floor to shake the bells and rattle.

This sequence was shot during the Khmer New Year of 2017 in the center of Siem Reap. The artists play, sing and dance in front of the shops, trying to collect some obole in a long net.

These artists are probably Samre and not Khmer, although they sing in Khmer.
